Ethereum is an open-source, blockchain-based distributed computing platform and operating system that was created for developers to build on top of the blockchain. It is the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, behind Bitcoin. Ethereum is the most actively used blockchain in the world. It enables smart contracts and decentralized applications (ĐApps) to be built and run without interference from a third party. Ethereum was first described in a whitepaper published in 2013 by Vitalik Buterin.
Ethereum is not just a platform but also a programming language (Turing complete) running on a blockchain, helping developers to build and publish distributed applications.
